Introduction

The National Policy for Senior Emiratis was issued in 2018 with the aim of improving the quality of social services to achieve the well-being and happiness of senior citizens, ensuring they enjoy a high quality of life and continue to participate in a safe and cohesive society. This policy serves several pillars, each contributing to the quality of life for senior Emiratis and those approaching this stage of life.

Policy Objectives

  1. Focus on preventive measures that guarantee the safety and rights of senior Emiratis within the society.
  2. Encourage joint efforts to offer competitive services in various fields.
  3. Create innovative channels for knowledge transfer and experience sharing across generations.
  4. Foster an environment where active living for senior Emiratis is encouraged.
     

Priorities & Key Components

  1. Healthcare:
    • Focus on preventive measures to ensure the safety and rights of seniors in the community. This includes initiatives, such as launching a training program for caregivers and coordinating with local authorities and the private sector to provide basic health insurance for senior Emiratis across all Emirates.
  2. Community Engagement and Active Living:
    • Establish innovative channels for knowledge transfer and sharing experiences across generations. This includes initiatives such as organizing training courses to enhance skills and develop capabilities in modern technology through social development centers, and organizing special sports activities for senior Emiratis through sports clubs, social development centers, and cultural centers across all Emirates in various sports.
  3. Investing in Senior Emiratis’ Experience and Civic Participation:
    • Promote a supportive environment for active living among seniors in the community. This includes initiatives such as launching a program to attract experienced retired citizens in various fields to benefit from their expertise in work or education sectors, and highlighting successful experiences of senior Emiratis to enhance their status as role models in the community.
  4. Infrastructure and Transportation:
    • Encourage collaborative efforts to provide competitive services in housing and infrastructure in various fields. This includes initiatives, such as preparing a guide for specifications and standards for age-friendly cities that cater to the needs of seniors, and including age-friendly institution standards in federal and local government awards.
  5. Financial Stability:
    • Provide necessary knowledge to ensure the financial stability of senior Emiratis. This includes initiatives, such as attracting support from local institutions that support entrepreneurial projects to offer facilities that help senior citizens establish their own entrepreneurial projects.
  6. Safety and Security:
    • Protect senior Emiratis through the launch of a training program to detect abuse and violence, protect them from exploitation and mistreatment, and establish a hotline to ensure complaints are addressed.
  7. Future Wellbeing:
    • Provide comfort and a dignified living for senior Emiratis through various initiatives, such as granting special discounts for senior citizens using public transportation, and preparing a cultural and recreational exchange program for retirees.
       

Expected Outcomes

  1. Achieve family cohesion and community solidarity through initiatives that serve senior Emiratis.
  2. Improve the standards of living for senior Emiratis.
  3. Promote and improve senior Emiratis’ mental and physical health.
  4. Achieve active aging for senior Emiratis and instill the value of self-development rather than care provision.
  5. Improve the quality of public services provided to senior Emiratis and accelerate access to them.
     

Target Audience

All senior Emiratis.
