Introduction

The UAE Circular Economy Policy was issued in 2021, representing a comprehensive framework that outlines the directions of the UAE in achieving sustainable management and efficient utilization of natural resources. Its priorities encompass sustainable infrastructure, sustainable transport, sustainable manufacturing, and sustainable food production and consumption. This policy aims to adopt consumption and production methods ensuring the quality of life for current and future generations, enhancing resource efficiency, and reducing waste.

Policy Objectives

  1. Achieve sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources.
  2. Promote a circular economy and advocate for sustainable consumption and production models that alleviate environmental strain and fulfill fundamental requirements.
  3. Support the private sector to shift towards adopting and using cleaner industrial production methods and techniques.

  1. Sustainable food production and consumption.
    • Promote renewable production.
    • Boost input productivity.
    • Reduce food loss and waste.
    • Promote the recycling of biological waste.
  2. Sustainable transportation.
    • Increase the number of low-carbon vehicles.
    • Develop plans for integrated multi-modal transport systems.
    • Support public and shared transport models.
  3. Green infrastructure.
    • Develop smart and sustainable urban plans.
    • Encourage green building design and construction.
    • Promote the use, renovation, and upgrade of buildings and infrastructure.
  4. Sustainable manufacturing.
    • Boost resource efficiency.
    • Encourage sustainable remanufacturing and reuse business models.
    • Support product and material design.
    • Support green sectoral clusters (eco-industrial parks).

Expected Outcomes

  1. Decrease in emissions of greenhouse gases and other harmful pollutants.
  2. Development of a manufacturing sector that is more efficient, competitive, forward-looking, and innovative.
  3. Support green jobs.
  4. Formation of urban systems that are more efficient and productive.
  5. Improvement in the availability of goods, services, and housing.
  6. Creation of cities that are healthier and more vibrant, which are conducive to quality living.
  7. Alleviation of traffic congestion and enhancement of ease and speed of mobility.
  8. Reduction in the number of traffic accidents.
  9. Improvement in the overall public health of the UAE's ecosystem.
  10. Expansion of community access to nutritious and healthy food options.
